Why do you need to Brush your Maine Coon?

Tabby Maine Coon Cat being brushed on tree stump best cat brush for maine coon

Maine Coon’s look fantastic, and their fur plays a big part in doing so. But, as I’m sure you’re aware, their large size means more fur!

Maine Coon’s are a long hair cat, which means that they require regular grooming regularly.

Maine Coon’s fur and coat have three layers once fully grown. They are also prone to shedding their fur in the warmer months as the breed is accustomed to harsh cold weather, like in Maine.

Due to their long fur, they are prone to matting, which may cause your Maine Coon to be distressed, uncomfortable, or even in pain. There are specific brushes to demat your Maine Coon, so if you’re looking for this, we recommend you view our best-rated de-matting brushes for your Maine Coon.

Another issue that your Maine Coon will most likely face is hairballs. All cats get them; it’s a part of owning a cat. But, grooming them often will significantly reduce the amount and size of hairballs your furry feline friend is vomiting. No one likes to vomit, or cleaning up after it, so grooming your Maine Coon should be something that you need to do.

Once your Maine Coon has fully grown, they may start to appear shinier or have an oily look on their coat. Having an oily look is entirely normal! If you do not regularly groom your Maine Coon, their fur may start to appear more greasy than oily. If this is the case, you are not grooming your Maine Coon regularly enough.

If you groom your Maine Coon regularly, you may need to take them to the vet for a check-up.

You should now know why you need the best cat brush for Maine Coon’s!

What Types of Brushes Can you use for Maine Coons?

There are many types of brushes for cats. Generally, short-haired cats do not need much grooming and maintenance. In contrast, long-haired cats, such as the Maine Coon require more specialist brushes to maintain their coat.

Below we have listed the five main types of brushes you should look out for.

Soft Grooming Brush

A soft cat grooming brush can also be thought of as a bristle brush. Soft Grooming Brushes are the perfect brush for quick grooming sessions with your Maine Coon. The Soft Grooming Brush will allow you to brush out any dirt and fur that has been shedded and ready to fall off your Maine Coon.

If you are looking to give your Maine Coon a thorough grooming session, Soft Grooming Brushes are not the ideal brush for this. They won’t be able to reach past the topcoat of your Maine Coon where dirt, mats, and excess fur can be found and not removed quickly.

De-matting Brush

K9konnection Double Sided Dematting cat comb best cat brush for maine coon

Your Maine Coon will probably experience their fur matting at some point in their life. Fur matting is inevitable, and you must be prepared for it. Matting can cause your Maine Coon to be distressed if the mats are too big or there are many of them. They can become painful or irritated if they aren’t removed.

De-matting Brushes are specifically for mats that long-haired cats such as Maine Coons experience. A good de-matting brush will make sure that any small mats starting to appear will be dealt with quickly. If you do leave them to grow, your de-matting brush will work, but it may take longer, and you run the risk of your Maine Coon getting distressed while you do this.

Are you thinking that you might need a de-matting brush for your Maine Coon? Why not click here and jump down to our best-rated de-matting brushes for your Maine Coon.

Deshedding Brush

FURminator Cat Deshedding Tool Best Cat Brush for Maine Coon

Maine Coons shed a lot. Unfortunately, there’s no escaping this. You can help them shed their fur more effectively, though.

Deshedding brushes do precisely what you need. They are perfect for long-haired feline friends like your Maine Coon. An excellent de-shedding brush will be able to go deep in your Maine Coon’s coat and reach the undercoat where a lot of their fur will be shedded. The brush will pull out the excess hair and mean that less hair will be left around your home. A well designed de-shedding brush will be able to do this effortlessly without causing too many problems, if any, for your Maine Coon while you brush them.

If you think that you need an excellent de-shedding brush, why not click here to jump down and see our best-rated de-shedding brushes for your Maine Coon?

Comb Brush

Resco Made Wrap Comb for Pets Best Brush for Maine Coon

Comb Brushes are very similar to dematting brushes. They are capable of getting rid of mats that your Maine Coon may have, and they are also able to detangle any tangled fur. A Comb Brush is a brush with one line of metal pins spread out to maximize their effectiveness.

Using a Comb Brush is a great way to prevent any mats or potential tangles from occurring. Detangling and dematting make this type of brush perfect for quick grooming sessions when you haven’t got a lot of time to spare.

Slicker Brush

Hertzko Self Cleaning Slicker Brush best brush for maine coon cat

Slicker Brushes are excellent at removing dead fur and dander from your Maine Coon’s coat. They are also perfectly capable of removing any tangles that may have occurred in your Maine Coon’s coat.

Slicker brushes are easy to identify as they always have metal pins. The metal pins are also spaced out evenly, are quite long, thin, and have a slight bend towards the end of each pin. A good Slicker Brush will easily remove dead fur from your Maine Coon’s undercoat, while also removing any dander and dirt. Your Maine Coon’s coat will always look great after using a Slicker Brush on it!

What Makes up my Maine Coon’s Coat and Fur?

ginger maine coon cat with shedded fur best cat brush for maine coon cats

Maine Coon’s have a fantastic looking coat, and they even feel great to touch!

A fully grown Maine Coon’s coat and fur consists of three layers. Your Maine Coon will not develop the third coat until they are older and fully grown.

The three layers a Maine Coon has are the undercoat, middle coat, and topcoat.

The undercoat consists of fine soft fur that helps keep your Maine Coon warm from the harsh cold that they were originally brought up in as a breed. Generally, their undercoat fur is soft and maybe even slightly curly. Their undercoat will thicken a considerable amount in the winter to keep them warm.

The middle coat lies above the undercoat and beneath the topcoat. The middle coat consists of stiffer and coarser hair than the undercoat, and its main job is to insulate the undercoat.

The topcoat should be self-explanatory! It is the top layer of fur that is found on your Maine Coon and is the longest of the three coats. The topcoat is what protects the two layers beneath it, as well as the skin. Once your Maine Coon has developed their topcoat, they will appear to have a slightly oily look on their coat. An oily look is entirely healthy. As Maine Coon’s are originally from Maine, they had to adapt to their surroundings. By adapting to Maine’s climate, their fur became water-resistant, which is why their fur has an oily look.

You must always make sure that your Maine Coon’s coat has a natural oily look to it. If it starts to look greasy, like our hair does when we haven’t washed it, there may be some cause for concern. If you haven’t been grooming your Maine Coon regularly, now would be the time to do this!

While grooming your Maine Coon will help keep your Maine Coon looking fantastic, you must also give them a good diet. Why not have a read of our best cat foods for Maine Coons?

FAQs

How often Should you Brush a Maine Coon?

You should brush your Maine Coon daily with a general brush. You can use more specialist brushes to get rid of matting or to help your Maine Coon shed weekly if you would like.

How to Brush a Maine Coon Cat?

Brushing a Maine Coon shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Firstly, you should make sure that you have the best cat brush for Maine Coon’s. You should try and start with their back and tail with a Soft Grooming Brush or Pin Brush to remove any dirt or excess shedded fur. This can then be repeated on their sides, chest, legs, and even their belly if needed.

If they have mats in their fur, use a Dematting brush to remove the mats from their fur. If your Maine Coon is beginning to shed their fur, use a De-shedding brush to remove all of their excess dead fur from their undercoat.

Usually, a Maine Coon’s head will just need a quick brush with a Soft Grooming Brush or Pin Brush.

If you have groomed your Maine Coon properly, their coat should appear to have a natural oily look. A natural oily look means that their coat is healthy. If their fur starts to look greasy, like our hair does when it hasn’t been washed, there may be a cause for concern.

How do I Stop my Maine Coon from shedding?

Maine Coon cats originate from Maine. They are perfectly suited to cold climates but will adapt themselves in the warmer months. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to stop your Maine Coon from shedding. You can use de-shedding brushes to help your Maine Coon get rid of their excess fur, though.

Are Maine Coon Cats High Maintenance?

Yes and no. Maine Coons are high maintenance with how much they will need to be groomed. Maine Coons aren’t high maintenance because you will only need to feed them once or twice a day, depending on the food you give them. They are friendly, energetic cats that will want your love and attention but are perfectly capable of keeping themselves entertained.
